How to Choose the “Right” AI Model

It can be confusing to pick the “right” AI model.  However, when you break it down, it’s not that hard to choose the right tool.  To start with, here is a thoughtful article from Ethan Mollick on the topic.

To me, the choice boils down to three “how much” questions:

  1. How much time do you want to invest in learning new tools?
  2. How much money do you want to invest in AI tools?
  3. How much do you care about privacy policies, model personality, product safety…?

There’s one other question which is: “what task do you want to do with the AI?” My assumption, for what I need to do, is that all of the major LLMs are sufficient for my needs.

So, the way that I answer the “how much” questions is:

  1. I think mastery of one tool is better than surface knowledge of five,
  2. I don’t want to pay for multiple subscriptions, and
  3. I don’t have deep feelings about privacy, personality, et cetera that would make me chose one tool over another.

Those answers take me to OpenAI’s ChatGPT as my primary model. It has:

  • Basic & deep reasoning versions
  • Agents
  • Image generation
  • Multi-modal inputs
  • The new Atlas browser
  • 75% market share

So, ChatGPT is my choice!  To figure out the right AI model for you: read the article, answer the three “how much” questions, and pick what’s best for you.
